Review of That Thing You Do! (1996) by Chris B — 03 May 2009
A classic 90s flick. Oh hell, movies from the 90s being called classics now makes me realize how much older I'm getting. This came out when I was in high school, I liked it now as much as I did back then, only gets better with age. It's a fine testament to the fleeting nature of stardom and the fickleness of celebrity.
Jimmy (Johnathon Schaech), Lenny(Steve Zahn) and a dude who is only known as the Bass Player (Ethan Embry) are put together with Guy (Tom Everett Scott) by pure circumstance when the drummer for their band is injured. Guy is a great one so they bring him on to play a talent show competition, a one time thing. Thanks to Guy's contribution, making the slow tune into a rocker, they win the contest and eventually win the notice of a big time band manager for a major record label, Mr. White (Tom Hanks). The more their hit song 'That Thing You Do' climbs the charts, the bigger the venues they play are the more attention they get. But it's clear things won't work thanks to the lousy, transparent attitude of Jimmy and happy go lucky Lenny.
Fun movie all around with a good soundtrack. You may think you'll get sick of hearing the same song for almost two hours but it works somehow.
