Review of That Obscure Object of Desire (1977) by Jose G — 02 May 2008
One of Bunuel's better films. He may have peaked with The Discreet Charm, but this film is charming in its own right. A seemingly normal narrative (Bunuel returned to this after his experimentation with the episodic narrative structure in his Parisian trilogy), we are soon derailed off of the "train tracks" (another one of Bunuel's vehicular tropes) and the story unfolds in a dark, yet humorous manner.
Though nothing about this film can be explained fully, one thing is for certain: It provides enthusiastic insight into a man's obsessive nature in his pursuit of the "obscure object of desire.
