Review of Tetro (2009) by Richard V — 20 Jul 2009
"TETRO" is an epic and glorious product of a director that had been floating through time trying to bring something of rich substance to the screen for the first time since "Apocalypse Now". As vast a statement as that is, it's completely true. Rich well rounded characters, poetic direction and lurid black & white cinematography; with occasional color segments added at key moments. Everything about this film has been carefully placed and the end result is simply overwhelming.
Coppola has not topped his epic masterpiece "The Godfather Part II", but has nonetheless created an incredibly textured study in family relationships built on the foundation of deception. While Coppola has constructed a very fine screenplay and directed the film like a true master, the film would have fallen apart if not for the great cast, particularly Vincent Gallo. Gallo, the face with a million stories, the anti-hollywood prodigy who is mostly criticized for being too self-obsessed, turns in one of the best performances I've seen in sometime. You'll hate him, you'll laugh with him, you'll connect and understand what the definition of pain is to him.
"TETRO" is the Best Film of 2009 so far. I hope that the Academy notices Vincent Gallo and honors him with a Best Actor Nomination come Oscar season.
