Review of Testament of Youth (2015) by Amanda C — 22 Jul 2015
It's a shame that Testament of Youth is going to be buried in obscurity with its bizarrely placed summer release. It's a solid film, anchored in a wonderful performance from Alicia Vikander and more importantly gives us a new angle on the tired WWI film, this time from a woman who was a nurse on the front lines.
Testament of Youth is every bit as harrowing as any film about soldiers on the front and gives some insight into just how widespread the devastation from the war was. It destroyed everyone it came into contact with.
Men, women, soliders, nurses, no one was spared, but we so often ignore stories of the home front and the women who were just as instrumental as the men who fought and died. These women were just as brave and just as damaged by their experiences as the men we so often give voice to.
Testament of Youth is a step towards acknowledging that there are other stories worth telling.
