Review of Testament of Youth (2015) by Sujata B — 22 Feb 2016
Absolutely loved this movie - have re-watched it several times. This is not your flashy, action-packed film. Rather, it is subtle, thoughtful, and - ultimately - hauntingly heart-wrenching. The characters recite poetry. Well, I found the whole movie poetic. The acting was excellent and Alicia Vikander - who I'd never heard of before I saw this - blew me away. She didn't overact where the situation might have made that tolerable. Rather, her understated, restrained portrayal touched me more than garish histrionics ever would have. The rest of the cast was excellent as well and I really loved the use of dialogue, cinematography, and music throughout the film, all serving to heighten the underlying, powerful emotions that the characters experience.
I am really surprised this movie didn't get more press. For me, it was my hands-down favorite movie of 2015.
