Testament of Orpheus is a beautiful, bold, and provocative piece of surrealist cinema, but it does little that hasn't already been accomplished in the previous two Orpheus films. Indeed, this entry in the trilogy seems even more narcissistic since Cocteau himself plays Orpheus.

No doubt, Testament of Orpheus would be a brilliant piece of avant-garde cinema on its own, but when taken in the context of the trilogy it loses some of its punch. Still, it is a breathtakingly sublime piece of cinema that features one unforgettable image after another.

This review of Testament of Orpheus (1960) was written by on 27 Nov 2009.
