Review of Tess (1979) by Vedat D — 30 Nov 2007
When I first saw this movie 20 something years ago, I thought I fell in love with Kinski. Now seeing it again, I realize that I actually fell in love with the movie itself. An overwhelmingly beautiful movie in all aspects: scenery, costumes, cast; even the tragedy of it has a twist of beauty in it.
The use of seasons and scenery to convey the changing moods throughout the film is quite remarkable. If you are interested in Hardy's novel, read the text; but watch this movie for its own account.
Frankly, I do not see the point in expecting an all around faithful adaptation of the novel to the iota in a project like this, least of all from someone like Polanski.
