Of course i'm not intellectual enough to read thomas hardy so this is the next best thing. three hours flew by. I have to give it to polanski though if you are into period pieces this is pretty good, although pales in comparison to such classics as The Leopard.
the scene with the hunters and dogs passing by tess in the english countryside...mesmerizing though I must admit. worth a watch if you have 3 hours to spare.
