Review of Tess (1979) by Reginald R — 17 Apr 2005
Alice et Martin.....Pretty worthless drama for the most part. Gets more interesting towards the end. Main problem being that one of the two main characters is completely unlikable when he should be likable. Juliette Binoche is ok, although her role isn't too good either.
Goodbye Mr Chips......Intolerably soft and wimpy film about the life of a school teacher. I hope no one takes it the wrong way, but I could swear every single person in that school was gay. Nevertheless, I guess all the well-meaningness won me over eventually.
Bringing up Baby......Pretty nice little comedy by Howard Hawks with Cary Grant and Katharine Hepburn. Nothing spectacular, but reasonably enjoyable.
Tess....By Roman Polanski, suffers a bad lack of interesting characters or story. Tess is the stereotypical poor shy girl trying to find some love and her place in the 19th century world. Oddly, the film looks visually like something made in the 90s. But that's pretty much all the merit for it that I can think of.
Sexy Boys...(not in database:4/10). I guess the french have teenagers too. A very american-style superficial teen-comedy revolving around sexual experiences.
And finally a completely one-sided but extremely interesting documentary about recent argentinan political history. And another interesting documentary about Martin Luther King. I don't remember the title of either one, but I'll rate them both as 7.
