Review of Terms of Endearment (1983) by Merry B — 22 May 2008
I didn't like how there wasn't much background about the main characters. The movie just starts off with a lazy attempt to explain the history of the mother and daughter. Then, they just throw you into the beginning and kind of leave you to figure out what makes these characters worth caring about.
Overall, I thought the storytelling was dull and the plot was the same until she gets diagnosed with cancer. All of a sudden we go from bland to tragic. The transitions in plot are not very seamless and seem to just appear out of nowhere.
If you feel like a good cry, though, fast forward to the last 45 minutes of the movie. Otherwise, it's useless. Plus, there's too much yakking and not enough progression in the dialog.
