Review of Terms of Endearment (1983) by James H — 20 Dec 2008
Normally when a movie has won a bunch of oscars and is critically acclaimed I'm willing to give it the benefit of the doubt, but this movie was dreadful. There's just zero plot to it all, it's just little 10 minute sequences that say nothing about anything, then it just kinda ends abruptly at the end.
The cross cutting between the two stories feels more like someone channel surfing at night rather than an interesting structure. All the characters except Debra Wingers are annoying or dull. The whole romcom between Nicholson and Shirley Macclain was totally unbelievable.
The music was totally over used to make it seem sentimental at all times. There's just so much to hate about this movie. That said because Brooks is a normally a good writer and because the actors all put in great performances it ends being just dull rather than totally awful.
