Review of Terms of Endearment (1983) by Brian S — 10 Oct 2008
A superb script and an Oscar winning performance by Shirley Maclaine back up 1983's Best Picture. Shirley Maclaine, Debra Winger, and Jeff Daniels boast brilliant performances and James L. Brooks delivers great directing. Although Terms of Endearment is a great movie, Jack Nicholson's performance winning an Oscar is mind boggling. One of two big problems with the film, the other being the cancer. If it would've been just about the relationship between the mother and daughter it would've been much better. Instead, they decided it would be best to play the tragedy, family crisis card and kill Debra.
Winger. Forgot to mention the bratty and overwhelmingly annoying teenage son of Emma and Flap. In the end the pros outweigh the cons and Terms of Endearment gets 4 stars.
