Review of Terminator Genisys (2015) by Pavel C — 08 Jan 2016
This is another Terminator movie. It reuses all the elements of previous movies and delivers a sold, entertaining sci-fi blockbuster action movie. For that, it has received a lot criticism. The first Terminator movie was great sci-fi action with strong conceptual intelligence. The second Terminator movie expanded on this, by adding revolutionary visual effects and stronger characters to create a masterpiece. Terminator 2 made Arnold Schwarzenegger a super mega star and Governor of California, and is now part of cinematic history. That is what was expected of this movie, and in that sense it fails. It fails that, because it is more or less impossible. However, it is still a great movie. If you are a fan of the other Terminator movies, you will love this. Also, it is a lot better than all the Avengers and Iron Man movies. While those movies throw a lot of money on special effects and non stop action, Terminator Genisys still wants you keep your brains switched on. I am talking about mind bending Kaufman stuff, but solid sci-fi material. Most reviewers seems to have dumbed down these days, and wants to use the reptile brain and eat pop corn. While it does reuse a lot of its previous plot lines and devices, which is now part of the franchise, it does shake things around a bit. It makes a point about nano technology, which is currently growing exponentially in the real world without debate. Genisys is clearly a reference to Google and Facebook and the dangers of us relying too heavily on them for our daily lives. It also references the dangers of the Internet of Things (IoT) which is currently under heavy development and will in a few years a have a big impact on our daily lives. It may not be the first to reference the dangers of Google or social media in sci-fi movie, it may be the first to explicitly reference the Internet of Things in this context. It should receive more credit for this, and in the future, maybe it will.
With that said, sit down and enjoy the ride.
