Review of Ten Canoes (2006) by Clare C — 19 Jun 2007
Captivatingly shot, vivid colours and earthy humour. It had an ethereal, timeless quality - there was nothing to suggest that anything or anyone had changed from just beyond 'the dreaming' period so the story told by the elder brother was a pertinent guide to life.
The momentum we are used to in a traditional filmic narrative was absent, there was just life twisting and tumbling out in the stories told, with the trajectories spilling out as the storyteller saw fit.
I got into the flow, helped a lot by the beautiful setting, and enjoyed the journey...on um...ten canoes?
