This just shows that great acting and writing can save any concept. This movie is basically the same 'guy learns to give up his loser life for the girl of his dreams' sketch with a very silly (but novel) twist.
My favorite part were the *new* movie references. My favorite was that instead of spoofing Saturday Night Fever, they spoofed the *spoof* of Saturday Night Fever from 'Airplane'. Now that's clever.
