Review of Tears of the Sun (2003) by Kartik A — 21 Sep 2010
Tears of the Sun is a moving tale of the plight of the Nigerians and the denouement of the Civil War. Lt. A.K.Waters of the US Navy SEAL with his team is assigned a rescue operation in the deep forest areas of Nigeria, where he is to rescue Dr.Kendricks and three other Americans, of which two are Nurses and one is a Priest. Situations get hostile when Dr.Kendricks refuses to come with the SEAL team without her people at the hospital or rescue camp she set up in the jungles. Lt. Waters asks her to bring her people along only to leave a dismayed Dr.Kendricks, for he leaves the people and takes Dr.Kendricks onto the chopper.
As they fly along, Waters is struck by his conscience which makes him change his way and he comes back to the rescue point, and sends the chopper with children to the base, while he and his team, along with the people continue their journey to Cameroon. What comes their way is pain, suffering and extreme agony as they lose their people, some turn traitors and in the end they make it to Cameroon, with what is a new life to them.
The cinematography is good, but screenplay could have been better. Performances compliment the script with a equally brilliant score by Hans Zimmer. Do watch it if you are a fan of Bruce Willis, or the war genre, but you'll be disappointed when it comes to Monica Bellucci, because she's neither sensuous nor erotic in this movie. She's more of a Mother Teresa.
