Review of Tears of the Black Tiger (2000) by Anonymous User — 06 Jun 2009
You know out here in movieland, 5 out of 5 is serious business, right? Well, this deserves every bit of it. Marvelous, phenomenal, and a whole bunch of other well-deserved superlatives I can throw at this movie.
Absolutely insane from a technical and storytelling standpoint, but it manages to not only be coherent, but pretty moving as well. This is one of the most visually dazzling movies I've ever seen, you have to see it to believe it. It takes over-the-top "stylized" cinema to a whole new level, with not-so-subtle orgies of color, midget cowboys coming out of nowhere, sudden breaking of the fourth wall, ridiculous camera angles and other such insanity. It's also genre-bending at its craziest and finest: this is part Thai Spaghetti Western, part Tarantino-esque pastiche, part Romance, all weaved into a very good narrative that never felt contrived for me.
