Review of Team Foxcatcher (2016) by Sydney S — 12 May 2016
Haunting, Sad & Lingering...this film stays with you.
I've watched this film three times now. I had never even heard of Dave Schultz or his story before this film. And I knew absolutely nothing about Olympic wrestling. Now I keep watching it over and over trying to come to some kind of understanding as to why this happened. Yes, Du Pont was obviously mentally unstable. Just watching his interviews onscreen made me uncomfortable. I just felt an incredible amount of sadness watching this movie. I was sad for Du Pont because he never truly had a real friend. Until Dave. Dave, and his incredible family treated Du Pont with such kindness and compassion. And then he killed him. Just tragic. There were so many times during the film that I couldn't help crying. The sound effects at the end when Nancy is walking through their old home are just haunting. Listening to the laughter of the kids with their father and watching the home videos left a lump in my throat that I'm still trying to clear. What an amazing man Dave Schultz was. Thank you Jon Greenhalgh for telling his story. There is a lot to be learned about the human spirit from this film. Watch it. But be forewarned. It stays with you.
