Review of Team America: World Police (2004) by Sean N — 28 Nov 2010

Broadway actor Gary Johnston (Trey Parker) is 'drafted' into Team America, a military group responsible for taking out foreign terroists as they fight Kim Jong-il (also voiced by Parker) who plans to take over the world (M.Bison: 'Of Course!').

With a show like South Park, Trey Parker and Matt Stone are no doubt comedic geniuses. Team America doesn't have the same amount of humor as South Park, but it is still very entertaining. Even though the film does not indicate who they are mainly making fun of (which I'll explain later), the jokes in the film are still very funny and well written.

Pros:

*Parker and Stone do a great job with the script and jokes in the film. Even though, like I said, they don't indicate who they're fully making fun of, the jokes and musical numbers written by them are very funny.

*The whole concept of having puppets being the main characters in this film is very interesting. That's no surprise seeing how Parker and Stone initially created South Park using only cardboard paper. It does make me wonder though how this film would do in both the box office and with critics if they filmed this with actual actors.

Cons:

*To me, there is only one real problem that I think plagues this movie. That is the fact that it is unclear on who Parker and Stone are mainly making fun of. I do know that the film is a parody of big-time action films, but in terms of the humor it seems like they were making fun of both those who try to cause war and those who are against it. I mean, the actors against war belong to a group called F.A.G. Not really a huge problem here, but if they tried to distinguish who they were making fun of the most, then I think that this film would've done better with critics.

So in all, even though it is unclear who is mainly being made fun of in this movie, Team America is another great success for Trey Parker and Matt Stone.
