Review of Team America: World Police (2004) by Rowan C — 25 Jul 2011
It seems like with Trey Parker and Matt Stone that they are the Jim Abrahams, David Zucker and Jerry Zucker of this generation. With South Park, South Park the Movie, Team America, they are the next Jim, David and Jerry. Except with Trey and Matt's things there is more swearing and sex references, but the thing that stays the same - too many jokes and you have to watch the film/show about a dozen more time before you get every one.
Team America: World Police is a great film, yes it's heavily offensive, yes it's seriously funny and crude but what do you expect for a film by Matt and Trey?
It has an excellent script and characters and wonderful spoof moments of cliche movies, the best one probably being at the beginning when the character dies and there is dramatic music and screaming puppets.
People think the film is offensive, which it is, but it's doing what people think but wouldn't dare to say. It's spoofing big-budget action films and the cliches and stereotypes in them, the Invasion of Iraq and the war it bought and finally the American politics. But the thing is, like I said it's spoofing and criticizing them because that's what most of us think but yet we say "this is offensive" when we watch the movie. If it's offensive then why are you watching the movie? What do you expect from speak-their-mind Matt and Trey.
The film features a highly strong crude sex scene that if it was live-action the film would have the highest rating in all countries, but what makes the scene funny is that it's puppets. I don't need to explain the plot of the film because surely you already must know what it's kind-of about if your reading this but basically it's spoofing all of the big-budget action movies, the war of Iraq and politics.
This film is what you would get if you crossed Thunderbirds and South Park, set them on fire and got them drunk.
It's a very funny film that some of my friends actually had to walk out of because of how crude and offensive it was--- and they are normally the people who would love this type of film.
The whole film is stereotypical in it's portrayal of Muslims and offensive to celebrities because of the way they are portrayed. But if you take all of that out of the film, the only thing you'll be left with are the silent parts of the film with shots of pretty scenery which would only equal with a one-minute film.
