Review of Teaching Mrs. Tingle (1999) by Ned P — 31 May 2009
A black comedy suspense thriller in which three high school students imprison their ultra-strict teacher (Helen Mirren) in her own home, Teaching Mrs Tingle is a weird old mixture. Genuinely scary at times, with a basic idea that feels like it might have legs, it lets itself down by not making the characters rounded or believable enough.
Mrs Tingle herself is a particular disappointment, due to the dual combination of below-average writing and Mirren giving a strangely flat performance. Overall, forgettable.
