Review of Teaching Mrs. Tingle (1999) by Dave W — 17 Sep 2009
Teaching Mrs' Tingles fires off with a typical intro befitting a high school comedy with rawkus riffs in the fashion of An American Pie but there wasn't much to laugh at with this borish effort in film making.
Helen Mirren stars as the nasty Mrs' Tingle who is more incompassionate than Nurse Ratchet from One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest. I am surprised Mirren would surrender to a role that is literally very beenath her.
Katie Holmes also stars and is well Katie Holmes, what else can I say? This film is so boring that it almost feels like casting called for recognizeable hollywood faces such as Molly Ringwold, Michael McKean, Vivica Fox (1 scene only) and Jeffrey Tambor to retain general interest.
By films end no revelations were ever discovered, no truths exposed and we don't even understand why Mrs. Tingle is the way she is. There was no redemptive theme at the end and were left wondering what the hell happened to Mrs.
Tingle and what the hell did she learn from the whole thing? All we really know is she lost and that is all. Character development is very poor and you really don't care what happens to anyone. Not that I thought this would have any substance going into it but I didn't think I would dislike it this much.
