Review of Taxi Driver (1976) by Larissa N — 19 Feb 2013
Upon my 6th time viewing it, I realize that this is a film not about a hero, but about a psychopath who's final break-down happened to be socially noble. Travis is both repelled and intrigued by the city scum, he is obsessed that they seem to effortlessly find what he (the civilized) simply cannot.
He is a psycho, but he's driven by loneliness, giving many viewers a strong connection and feeling of empathy to him. This is Robert De Niro's best film, Jodie Foster's performance is the greatest performance from a child actor in the history of film.
This is perhaps Scorsese's best picture for it's ambiguous thematic and empathetic achievements, and possibly, the best film of the 70's.
