Review of Taxi Driver (1954) by Stafford V — 30 Jun 2014
What can I say that hasn't been already? This is an undisputable, un-aging, American classic hailing from a time when movies could be so dense and original that THEY inspire novels, instead of vice versa.
Travis Bickle is undeniably unhinged, but portrayed with great sensitivity by the indomitable Scorsese and De Niro. I don't know that the ending is entirely successful in conveying the film's message, but it can be interpreted in so many ways that it's ripe for discussion & speculation after the fact.
In that sense, it's fodder for dissection in film classes for generations. And Travis might be the first example of crazed, vigilante anti-hero that inspired countless seminal characters since - most notably, to me, Rorschach of Watchmen.
