Review of Tarzan (1999) by Ben F — 03 Jul 2010
You could call me crazy, but I really liked this movie a lot. I thought it was done extremely well. For the last film in the Disney Renaissance Era, "Tarzan" really does go out with a bang. It's awesome.
So Disney always has their own adaptations of various different fables. This time, they took the old story of the Ape Man and made it their own. The adaption to a kid's story is done extremely well, and this is clearly visible in the execution.
The voice acting this time around is pretty good. Glenn Close, Lance Henriksen, and Rossie O'Donnel are all in this movie, and they all deliver great performances. They made the movie extremely entertaining.
What was so unbelievably enthralling about this film was simply the animation. To date, "Tarzan" was the most expensive 2d animated film ever made, and it's clear why. A lot of the sequences we see are so beautiful, that sometimes I wonder if it's real or not. Sequences where Tarzan is racing his feet through fines and stuff are done extremely well, and it's clear that the production team put a lot of work into it.
This time around we don't really have the characters singing. All we have is Phil Collins providing the soundtrack, and that's okay, because he really does set the tone of the movie well. Songs like "You'll be in my Heart" are definitely memorable, and they fit very well into the progression of the film. If it weren't for Collins, this movie wouldn't be what it is.
And Besides all of that, the movie is extremely intense for a Disney movie. A lot of the fight scenes are extremely entertaining to watch, and I was honestly on the edge of my seat a couple of times.
"Tarzan" was a great end to the Disney Renaissance. The Renaissance will be remembered for capturing the imaginations of both kids and adults. It was an amazing time for Disney, and "Tarzan" was part of that amazing time, and it sure deserved to be. If only Disney movies could go through such a brilliant era again...I hope I live to see the day.
