Review of Tarzan (1999) by Thomas W — 08 Nov 2013
Tarzan is a film that can best be described as 'mixed'. I personally like it more than most other people would- I admit, but it does have some great memorable moments. At the same time however it does have unnecessary moments.
Some backgrounds are beautiful, some use too much old ugly CGI. The action against the jaguar leopard whatever was gritty and realistic, the baboon fight was too Hollywood and in-your-face (overall the action is good and fast while still keeping to the 'nature' theme of the film). The beginning was great, the ending was poor. The songs are great, but done by only one guy and with one tone so they will not appeal to everyone. I like how the story is changed to show more character to the gorillas. I hate the idea of putting a human villain in.
Oh yeah, lets talk about them- the characters. Basically: main characters good- side characters poor.
Tarzan has a lot of emotion and acts more human than heroric- afterall he does cause a lot of trouble for his ape-family because he is funloving, curious, or is conflicted about his life as the ape-man.
Jane is basically a simple 'disney princess' despite not being royalty. She does act cute sometimes though I find it weird how quickly she gets attracted to Tarzan- and I don't mean like being his girlfriend- I mean she gets legit horny.
Kala is a good mother figure who also shares Tarzan's pain and is a good 'herald' for him.
Kerchak is (I'm not kidding here) a racist who can't tolerate Tarzan. At the same time however you do see him try and protect his family- 3 times at least! This makes him an intimidating character to both fear and respect- a great anti-hero.
Terk is ok for me. She does get annoying sometimes and can ruin 2 or 3 scenes by NOT SHUTTING UP. But at the same time she does have some good moments.
NO ONE remembers Clayton. No 'top 20 Disney Villain' list EVER has him mentioned AT ALL. He's just a mad hunter, that's IT.
Tantor and The Professor are the most annoying characters of the film. Removing them would have been the best decision.
Overall half of this film is great, and the other half forgettable, mainly from poor side characters and poor ending acts.
