Review of Tarzan (1999) by Paul J — 09 Jun 2009
A dynamite and smart storytelling experience with stunning animation and a wonderfully spirited Jane. Half of this movie is among Disney's best work. The other half being ever so slightly flawed. The challenge being balancing the serious drama with the childlike silly bits.
(Also, the Gorilla's language being essentially in English is a bit weird.) Still, Disney took some considerable risks with the story. There are in fact FIVE deaths. All of which are handled expertly.
In particular, the Villain's comeuppance is beautifully haunting - the hacking away at nature inevitably tightens the noose around humanity's neck. Well done, Disney!
