Review of Tarnation (2003) by Per P — 29 Jun 2007
This is a difficult movie to rate, because I'm still pondering all the elements that seem to collide and raise questions.
Caouette's unquestionable narcissism seems necessary to make this heartfelt video diary - but does it make him interesting? Is it enough to watch Tarnation and be fascinated by the filmmaker's extreme self-dramatization?
I can't help but feeling that I'm watching the wrong movie in a way - being more captured by Caouette's need to expose his thoughts, soul and face than the actual story he's pretending to communicate.
It's like being told an interesting anecdote by someone who's saying "me, me, ME!" in every other sentence. Sometimes it actually works (it is his story, after all), sometimes it's just pretentious and even boring.
Still: It has its moments, and you can extract meaning from this. You just have to work for it.
