Monster-in-Law (Robert Luketic, 2005) **.

Monster-in-Law is another agreeable, but instantly forgettable romantic comedy starring Jennifer Lopez and her big ass. There are a few funny gags (namely the scene with the ditzy pop star), but it isn't enough to overcome the cut-and-paste story and stock characters. Lopez's sweet and innocent routine seems too insincere, but she is able to pull off a good moment here and there. Fonda tries valiantly to cover-up looking bored, while Wanda Sykes gets to do her shtick with a few nice zingers..

The Onion Field (Harold Becker, 1979) *1/2.

James Woods is great, but Franklyn Seales' horrendously bad performance destroys all chances of this movie rising above the standard crime drama..

Tarnation (Jonathan Caouette, 2004) ***.

Caouette's deeply personal film is an impressive achievement; it is also, sadly, overcooked. He recounts his own life through home movies, photos, and voice recordings. Caouette fills the film with extra style that feels, well, extra and unnecessary. It hurts the overall scope of the film, but his life is so interesting, and the idea is so unique, that the film still manages to remain a must-see..
