Review of Tape (2001) by John S — 24 Aug 2011
Tape is a darker, more serious turn for Linklater's minimalistic style and it works extremely well. The characters are extremely unlikable and it's mostly due to the actor's absolutely stupendous performances.
It's so incredible to see Robert Sean Leonard and Ethan Hawke back together again and they play off each other so palpably. If you add the frustrating ambiguous characters and the confusing banter between them, and the experience is oddly, well, frustrating.
But it's not necessarily a bad thing. By the film's end, you feel just as confused and frustrated as the characters and in that way, the film is a success. It's also such an interesting experience to study and analyze the depth of these characters and the intricateness of the dialogue.
