Review of Tango & Cash (1989) by Michael T — 23 Jun 2008
I kind of like this film in spite of myself. Stallone and Russell's escape from prison is a very thrilling scene; Stallone delivers a broadly comic performance; the film features Brion James, James Hong, Michael J. Pollard, and Robert Z'Dar in its cast; it has Jack Pallance in a scenery-chewing role as a drug kingpin; and features a young Teri Hatcher before she was Lois Lane on LOIS & CLARK (and a long time before DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES).
On the minus side; there are plot holes one could drive a Semi through; most of the dialogue is atrocious; apart from a few key scenes, the direction is not assured (the film had two directors); Russell's character comes off as a self-obssessed twit with a bad mullett; and many of the good scenes were ripped off from Hong Kong action films (most notably Jackie Chan's POLICE STORY and its sequels).
So I give 3 stars but it probably only deserves 2!
