Review of Tammy (2014) by Deo G — 10 Nov 2014
Tammy deserves a bit more love than it's been getting. All the issues on this movie can be blamed on a marketing campaign that advertised the movie as a hilarious romp with Melissa McCarthy. This movie is not even close to that of the trailers, but in many respects, that's not a bad thing.
The drama was mostly well realized, the writing mostly solid with great performances by Melissa and her supporting cast. Also, credit must be given where credit is due. This is director Ben Falcone's directorial debut and some issues with pacing and sentimentalism can be excused given his position.
That's not to say that the movie is vastly improved under that notion, that's not what I'm getting at. I saw Transcendence, another directorial debut (That of Wally Pfister) and that's my most despised movie of the year.
Finally, the most credit of this Melissa McCarthy fronted vehicle must go to Susan Sarandon, who, despite the large age difference between her and her character Pearl, plays the part well. Ultimately, I'm going to give Tammy a 4/5, it's a good movie, but evaluate whether you want more comedy or drama before seeing it.
