Review of Tammy (2014) by Maria V — 14 May 2015
Tammy, is not a good film. By a long shot. And, to me, it seems pretty clear that post Bridesmaids, Melissa McCarthy is becoming less and less enjoyable. In fact, by the time this film slogged its way into cinema, she was simply irritating. The screenplay is not well executed and the production is barely passable. I also take issue with these films because the director is usually rendered moot, that is they aren't apart of the conversation.
The love story was also terribly predictable and utterly uninteresting, since it had been repeated many times over. McCarthy also plays the exact same character she has played in EVERY film and its not entertaining anymore. This film was just a trudge to sit through. Ok, so this isn't a criminal film, but thats why I hate this so much. Its doesn't aim for anything remotely entertaining, yet nor does it try to be unwatchable. Its just an utter bore.
But, I must strongly disagree with the Razzies on this. Because, although this film definitely deserves some of the aforementioned "awards", Susan Sarandon does not. AT ALL. Just because some actor is in a bad movie, doesn't mean they themselves were bad. Her and Kathy Bates were about the only worthwhile and watchable thing about it. Give the damn Razzie to Melissa McCarthy, she actually deserves the coveted prize for once (oh no twice... wait, how many?).
Beside from having little to show in the narrative department, Tammy is another major and depressing step down for Melissa McCarthy, which is such a shame.
