Review of Talk to Her (2002) by Hassan G — 27 Aug 2011
Another excellent movie by Almodovar. I think it takes longer to get to the meat of the story, but once it does it's an excellent movie, if a bit pretentious. That's the probably the two main weaknesses of the movie, it's slow start and some pretentious scenes.
One of the scenes with Lydia and the bulls was particularly notable. As was the silent movie scene. While an entertaining, stand-alone, scene, and it does set up the turning point later in the movie, some of it felt unnecessary.
It just felt self-masturbatory, even for Almodovar. But that's it really, the movie develops into a very interesting melodrama, as all the Almodovar films I've seen, but, and I don't know how to explain this, it's a good kind of melodrama.
Nothing like in soap operas. Then again Pedro is probably more skilled at developing a story than a lot of these soap operas. But it's an interesting movie to follow, and it deals with some very complex themes and characters.
Strong acting and cinematography is also present here. Overall a great movie, I didn't enjoy it as much as Volver, but it's an excellent melodrama nonetheless.
