Review of Taking Woodstock (2009) by Sarah A — 02 Jan 2010
A most interesting period piece. Even without much actual music from the festival itself, I enjoyed learning how Woodstock came to occur. Much attention was paid to the details in this movie which always makes for much greater viewing enjoyment.
I don't know where he located so many antique autos but, as a car lover, it was wonderful. The movie can be slow at times and did appear to make the event seem like some kind of super spiritual lovefest.
Lee does give it a hint of just what the Boomers would accomplish later - GW Bush, Madoff, junk bonds, spoiled children, etc. but not enough to satisfy. That generation (and I am a member on the tail end) accomplished so little despite all the claims made in the 1960's.
So, it is a good period piece, explains how Woodstock came to be yet feels a bit empty on showing that little social change ever amounted from it. One last note, there is an amusing comment about how someone was charging a dollar to fill water bottles, who knew??????
