Review of Taking Chance (2009) by Toby E — 18 Sep 2009
Another one of those movies about Iraqi war side effects that nobody is going to see. Lt. Col. Michael Strobl (Kevin Bacon) volunteers to escort the deceased body of a fallen Marine, Chance Phelps. This is the true story of him escorting the body back home.
This isn't by any stretch of the imagination a movie without purpose; as a tribute to Chance, it is filled with the utmost respect and honor, but as a movie, there isn't really enough. Kevin Bacon is perfect for the role, and I like him as much as everybody else does, but it is very repetitive in that it is just him on this small trip, being treated respectfully by everyone he meets and lots and lots of saluting.
I am sure to anybody who knew the Marine, this is a very touching and moving send off, but when it really comes down to it, Taking Chance is a quiet movie with not a whole lot to say other than to give a final salute to Chance Phelps.
