Review of Taking Chance (2009) by Christen M — 22 Mar 2010
This film is one of three films about damaged or fallen soldiers returning home that I will briefly review. "Taking Chance" is a quiet yet touching drama about a senior officer (Lt Col.) who, for reasons that come to light, decides to volunteer to escort the body of a lowly Private First Class to the home town of the fallen soldier to be buried.
The film emerges into a funeral march which might seem dull (and truthfully it is quite slow), but the film-maker manages the plot and pacing well enough to keep things interesting, especially the cross-section of different reactions to the purpose of the Officer's journey and the people he meets who actually knew the PFC.
It was slow, but I liked this film. It didn't receive much attention, and it's not perfect, but I do recommend it.
