Review of Taking Chance (2009) by Dee C — 30 May 2009
CONSENSUS: A quiet, simple film put out by HBO that focuses on some of the lesser known aspects of fallen U.S. soldiers. Dialogue is kept at a minimum (which could very easily lose viewers who would describe it as "boring"), while facial expressions, body language, and a touching score moves the audience in a much more subtle way.
Dedicated solely to the memory of lost lives, the political agendas that could have easily been forced are thankfully not (which actually might disappoint some). An emotional, personal reflection is experienced by Lt.
Col. Strobl (portrayed magnificently by Bacon) as well as the viewer. The main character, however, is truly that of Chance Phelps: his silent, invisible, yet powerful presence being the foundation of the entire film.
A beautiful movie that unfortunately will not be seen by many due to its release not reaching the big screen. MY GRADE: A-.
