Review of Taken (2004) by Ryan V — 22 May 2015
A former soldier (Liam Neeson) is forced out of retirement when his daughter (Maggie Grace) is kidnapped by vaguely ethnic human traffickers. It's easy to compare Taken to films like Death Wish since it's undeniably a right-wing revenge fantasy.
Its generic plot is helped along by slick direction for the fight scenes, but its main saving grace is Neeson's gruff performance. He's much better than the movie needs him to be and he's likely the main reason why Taken did well enough to spawn both sequels and imitators.
It's no wonder that Neeson spent the next few years fielding countless offers to star in similar fare.
