Review of Take This Waltz (2011) by Shirley L — 19 Feb 2012
I was able to see what was a paid screening of this film apparently. It says this isn't released till June 29th 2012 on here, and well it was made in 2011 and circled the film festivals in 2011 apparently.
I have to start off by saying that this movie really threw me off guard more than any film I've ever seen. Firstly, I never expected a film that is in this category to be as mesmerizing as it is. Second, I never expected that this would end up being my favorite film of 2011, and now currently my favorite film of all time. This tends to change a lot, but I can't really help it. What surprised me even more here is that this was made by canadian Sarah Polley, who apparently just keeps getting better as a director and writer.
One thing to note here is that this is a 'strictly for mature audience' film. Nothing is shy in this film at all, and anyone going in will be shocked at how honest this film is in full. These are the most fleshed out characters I've seen on screen. I actually had to tare away my eyes from the screen for partial seconds just from being so glued to this. I can see a lot of what is here really making a lot of viewers uncomfortable with how blunt it is not only with it's dialog but with how odd and real these characters are.
It is a beatiful and somewhat sad romantic tale that actaully teaches us a lesson on love, and shows us how the choices effect our lives. Everything about this was just perfect and I couldn't recommend it enough. Be sure to seek it out if you can.
Note: there is still one showing of this left to air at 4pm today in Edmonton here, or else you will have to wait for this to be available to buy. But please do keep in mind that this is a pretty graphic film at times, and even a bit more so than the previous film I saw earlier today, "Shame". I'm not sure how this avoided the NC-17 rating to be honest.
