Review of Take This Waltz (2011) by Manny C — 30 Jul 2012
Sarah Polley is an actress of extraordinary gifts, and she brings those same instincts for truth and nuance to her directorial efforts. You need only watch her debut feature, 2007's Away From Her, for unvarnished truth.
Finally she gives us a follow up with Take This Waltz, a stinger of a film that lucks out big time by having the incandescent Michelle Williams as its star. Wiliams is Margot, a freelance writer in Toronto, comfortably married to Lou (Seth Rogen, as you've never seen him before onscreen), but when Margot meets a gorgeous rickshaw driver (Luke Kirby) she falls in love and her life falls apart.
The movie itself struggles to keep itself together, but Take This Waltz (inspired by the Leonard Cohen song of the same name), makes Margot a marvel of contradictions and ambiguity, and Williams is a master at conveying messy feelings.
She's a force of nature. Bravo to her.
