Review of Take This Waltz (2011) by Simon G — 25 Sep 2012

It looks a bit too much like a romantic ,ovie but the key difference with this potential affair is that the woman in question isn't leaving an abusive/cheating husband and it's this grey area that makes the film very interesting. Michelle Williams portrays Margo, the lead with the dilemna, expertly and she flips between quirky, sad, fun and lost throughout the film (sometimes you love her, others she infuriates). Luke Kirby somehow comes off as a decent guy despite him happily leading Margo on and Seth Rogen shows a side I haven't seen from him before as the "nice-guy" who unwittingly messes up big time with the obvious things yet excells in others. Without giving away the ending, the film is ultimately a lot more about Margo than her decision to have an affair or not and it's hard to say who the real winners and losers are.

A very clever film that expertly has you empathising with all three central characters and as such has you thinking about the implications for quite a while afterwards. It's good to have this happen with a drama for once rather than a sci-fi film or crime-thriller with a twist.
