Review of Take This Waltz (2011) by Chihoe H — 18 Nov 2012
Now whenever I hear "Video Killed The Radio Star," the ending scene of "Take This Waltz" where Michelle Williams sits in the Scrambler, eyes closed, lips slightly curled, head swaying, will come to mind and a mix of sadness and comfort will subsequently be felt.
This is a testament to Sarah Polley as a filmmaker รข" the craft of invoking emotions through sights and sounds. "Take This Waltz" is set in Toronto and showcases the colours and charm of Little Portugal and other nooks of the city, in all its ordinariness, but not plainness.
It's an offbeat film filled with passion and romance, or the lack thereof, and it is a candid piece of what could unhinge a marriage or spark a relationship. Williams, Luke Kirby, and Seth Rogen present a sincerity and subtleness that truly brings out the melancholy and the disillusionment of not being able to find the rhythm, and the joy and the chemistry when a pair succeeds in finding the tandem in a waltz through love and life.
