TAKE THIS WALTZ starts off as a 21st century BRIEF ENCOUNTER and then in its third act heads into very different and very contemporary territory. Bravo to writer/director Sarah Polley for capturing the rhythms and uncertainty of modern life--a world in which a better life, a better job, a better marriage are all just around the corner or so we are told.
So why settle, keep looking. Polley investigates this attitude with warmth, humor, and ultimately, true pain and heartache. All three leads are exceptional especially Michelle Williams and Luke Kirby who are both quirky, a bit wacky, and very very sexy.
Unfortunately, Polley, in her second feature, is still a sophomore. She directs her actors brilliantly, her screenplay is wonderful, but her filmmaking is erratic. Magnificent moments are followed by awkward scenes clearly inserted to follow some previously agreed upon agenda that does not totally suit the final film.
