Review of Take Shelter (2011) by Kimberly B — 23 Jun 2012
I admit this movie was done well and the acting was good. But I for one find it incredibly frustrating and upsetting to watch movies in which the main characters, who are basically good people with good lives, experience all of it going to shit, either through their own stupidity, other people's evil, or the intervention of the gods.
Or, all three. I also usually find a lack of closure very frustrating. This movie was mostly all about this guy's life going to shit, and in the end: no closure. Low-level tension and vague gloom keeps the pace moving, if a bit slowly at times, so the plot felt bogged-down.
This movie could have used more editing -- no need for this to drag on longer than 2 hours! We are supposed to be a little confused by the main character's actions, but I also found most of the other characters' actions a little baffling as well, since none of them seemed to do the obvious or common sense thing.
All in all: two hours of unfulfilling frustration.
