Review of Take Shelter (2011) by Wes M — 26 Sep 2012
"Sleep well in your beds. 'Cause if this thing comes true, there ain't gonna be any more." Excellent. Easily the best disaster movie I've ever seen. It should be noted I recently discovered that I don't like the disaster genre.
However, this movie rocks the genre to its core and thrives because it is far from your typical disaster flick: there is no eye-candy ($5 million budget), the storm is not a character in the movie, and there's much more emphasis on the impending storm rather than the actual storm.
This is part disaster film, part psychological drama, and a speck of horror thrown in. Michael Shannon carries the movie single-handedly on his shoulders. Fyi, he is also agent Van Alden in Boardwalk Empire and soon to be General Zod in Man Of Steel, can't wait.
And yea, Jessica Chastain was good too, but we already knew she would be good. My eyes have been opened, Mr. Shannon, well done (hey Academy, you missed one).
