Review of Take Shelter (2011) by Paula S — 21 Feb 2013
Every now and then a psychological thriller comes along that either speeds up the heart rate, or speeds up the yawn rate. Director Jeff Nichols' addition the genre takes a unique look at one's descent into madness, and gives a new meaning to the phrase "quiet determination" with brilliant intensity.
The film is carried by (and hugely benefits from) Michael Shannon's quiet but captivating performance, and is wonderfully supported by two-time Oscar nominee Jessica Chastain ('The Help' / 'Zero Dark Thirty').
Extremely unsettling and often somewhat disturbing, 'Take Shelter' is exceptional, and one of the most visionary films of 2011.
