Review of Take Shelter (2011) by Nick C — 20 Aug 2013
"Take Shelter" is one of those beautiful, minimalist movies. It gives us nothing, but everything. It only requires emotions and dread, and the dread is only carried by the emotion. A normal, rural man is suddenly plauged by horrid nightmares of a storm that is so strong it somehow also affects the mammals, turning them into savages.
He has to put his family dog outside afterwards, and complains to a doctor that after his dog bit him in his dreams, the pain in his arm took a whole day to dissipate. His mother is Schizophrenic, so he must just be going crazy.
He gains no knowledge about this. Only a desire for safety for him and his family that is so strong it overpowers his actions and words. His dreams overcome him so much that everyone becomes either a demon or a victim to him.
He stands alone and does not care. How visceral a performance. How visceral a film that acts like it is not trying to be.
