Review of Take Shelter (2011) by Archibald T — 05 Nov 2012
How is this movie so highly rated? Several very glaring problems:
1. It's VERY SLOW. I love the last 20-30 mins of it, but the rest of it is very slow and flat.
2. Curtis is clearly NOT suffering from paranoid schizophrenia. All his fears came from his dreams, he never had any serious hallucinations in real life. The dreams and reality are very clearly separated, which completely rule out any kind of serious paranoid delusional condition. It gives his fears and anxiety very little weight.
3. Even the storm in the dreams aren't all that terrifying or unsettling. It's hard to be convinced that one can be driven mad by such tepid nightmares.
That said, what the film says about family dealing with mental illness is very compelling and realistic. I just wish the build up is more convincing, or spend more time exploring its various themes in depth.
