Review of Tag (2018) by Rodger M — 05 Jul 2018
The RT/F's average review is - unfortunately - just about spot-on in this situation. The cast could not be better selected, at least for me. I chuckle as soon as I see Jake Johnson on the screen. Ed Helms is always funny in the right movie, Hannibal Burress is usually great and actually has the best lines in the movie ("Time is just a construct.
.."). Jon Hamm is..Jon Hamm, an always enjoyable situation but an entirely underused waste of huge potential. Yes, he'll always be the straight man, but he can be an amazing straight man (see his amazing performance in Baby Driver) - here he was sadly underutilized.
Blame the director. Jeremy Renner, on the other hand, shined in his over-the-top "villian" ninja role. I'm not sure why Isla Fischer was there, other than eye candy, but if that was the reason, it definitely worked for me.
I gave this movie 3 stars objectively, but I'd give it a B+ on a subjective basis, only because I just love the cast. Sort of a poor man's Ocean's Eleven cast.
